Written in verse by Culinary Director Alla Wolf-Tasker AM, with stunning illustrations by the late Allan Wolf-Tasker, this heartfelt book tackles themes of problem solving by a colourful, diverse community. It explores resilience, courage, a reflection on greed, the pursuit of personal wealth at the expense of others and the stifling sense of solitude and “aloneness” it engenders. Yet, it also celebrates the joys that are to be had through music, good food and friendship when a community prevails and celebrates. The verses in the book were written some 40 years ago by Alla Wolf-Tasker, who penned the poem, and her late husband Allan Wolf-Tasker, who brought it to life with his watercolour illustrations. The production of the book was paused as both became engrossed with the building of Lake House. It was the arrival of two grandchildren that spurred the resurrection of the little book – Allan completing the illustration in 2022 shortly before his death in December of that year. A 40-seat weekend only restaurant that might emulate Alla’s experiences of top end French regional hospitality in the 70’s. Fine cooking, local produce, seasonality, great service. A restaurant worthy of a journey in itself, not just a detour. 40 years on, whilst Lake House certainly looks much different to what it was in those early years, our guests continue to remark on the connection and inspiration they feel here. Australian Landscape Artist Allan Wolf-Tasker shares his passion for the region he calls home; Daylesford, a beautiful village surrounded by the Wombat State Forest, 80 minutes from Melbourne. In this exhibition and book he focuses on the waterways around his home; specifically Lake Daylesford. This man made lake has a rich and interesting history and is now one of the most picturesque spots in regional Victoria. The paintings are large & colorful landscapes; acrylic on Belgian Linen. They hang throughout Wolf-Tasker's property "Lake House" that he built and operates with his wife; chef Alla Wolf-Tasker. Inside this book "Lake Daylesford" you'll find conversations in the studio as Allan describes his painting and practice to writer Andrew Masterson. There are pages dedicated to a selection of his paintings and photographs of the landscape by renowned Australia photographer Sharyn Cairns. It's a wonderful depiction of the beauty of the region, an interesting story of art & passion.

Australian artist, painter Allan Wolf-Tasker has spent a lifetime studying the Australian landscape. From aerial perspectives along the Great Ocean Road to a drought-ridden Victorian countryside; he has always managed to find an optimistic view of Australia’s diverse terrain. In this most recent exhibition; Allan leaves his studio in Daylesford for the vastly different Far North of Australia, an area he has visited with his wife Alla since the 1970s but never before captured on his canvas. The opportunity to “fully exploit the colour palette” proved too tempting…. "In a sense the subject matter is secondary to the finished effect of these works. I spend considerable time observing, recording and then drafting each image onto the canvas. The aerial perspective from previous exhibitions still plays a major role at times. From that point on though, it is all about the painting. Subject matter will be moved, re-calibrated, distorted or even permitted to morph into something else. Representation begins to take a back seat and fun, optimism and determination in the creative process leap to the fore. The beauty of these pieces therefore, if you agree, is in the dramatism of the finished works …. The leap of faith that they ask you to take in your own assessment and interpretation.” Collectors familiar with his past exhibitions will recognise an evolution in Wolf-Tasker’s painting processes and may be captivated by the increased vigour and brushwork in these latest works. This book features an introduction by ABC's Viginia Trioli and beautiful imagery by Sharyn Cairns.
