A House Party to be remembered... August 2024

Three days of good food, friendship, joy and celebration

23-26 August 2024

It was a weekend we will never forget. A full house both at Lake House and our Dairy Flat Lodge & Farm. Full to the brim with guests who have dined with us, celebrated with us, grieved with us, stayed with us and supported us over the past 40 years…

We were joined by a cast of friends who came to play, including the team at ST. ALi coffee. Kate Ceberano opened the weekend celebrations with the wonderful Kathleen Halloran on guitar, followed by an intimate show in the supper club exclusively for Hotel & Lodge guests. The inimitable and fabulous Flower Drum, Melbourne, delivering a little snackage in the form of dim sum.

There were cocktails and card games in the library, brunch with the bakers at our Dairy Flat Farm with a sneak peek of what’s new. There was the cold plunge club for guests who braved the cold lake waters, and the warm body club for those who opted for the heated pool, hot tub and sauna…

Saturday evening, as the sun set, we paired caviar with a vodka luge whilst guests gathered around firepits on the lake shore. Winter put on a show and a magical sunset was enjoyed as Nicholas played his electric violin and the champagne flowed.

Next a gathering of likeminded guests at shared tables over a menu of some of the most awarded and celebrated dishes from the Lake House repertoire. Dishes that made the pages of London’s Tatler, others made famous on Masterchef Australia over many years when Culinary Director Alla Wolf-Tasker AM was guest judge.

Paired with selected drops from our award-winning cellar and from some of our favourite winemaking families, we also released the first wines from our Dairy Flat Farm. These were produced with great care and consideration by family friend and industry great Michael Dhillon of Bindi Wines, in honour of our late Allan Wolf-Tasker and appropriately named, “The Artist.”

The final night in grand crescendo style; guests were met on the red carpet by Mother Nature’s wildest weather… Thunder, lightning and epic winds greeted guests as we gathered inside The Terrace, by the huge open fire. But the champagne flowed, guests who had gathered for the previous three days greeted each other like long term friends. Those joining the festivities for the first time were fast brought within the inner circle. The comradery and shared sense of community, friendship and joy were wonderful to watch and experience.

A long table dinner commemorating 40 years of Friendship, Joy, Hospitality and Good Food at our house on the lake was interspersed by singing, dancing, a few heartwarming speeches, nods to the past and present corralled by MC Alice Zaslavsky.

Some of the Australian restaurant world’s best known names contributed to a feast of signature dishes paired with beverages from some of our favourite makers and suppliers. Andrew McConnell (Gimlet, Cumulus, Supernormal, Cutler & Co.), Shane Delia (Maha), Matt Moran (Aria), Peter Gilmore (Quay) and Kirsten Tibbals (Saveur) all produced a signature dish delivered by the extraordinary Lake House Kitchen team. Wines from David K Jones, Latta, Eastern Peake, Bindi, and Stanton & Killeen flowed.

Raleigh Williams and her band entertained us, there was dancing (of course), and the skies cleared up for a spectacular firework display over lake Daylesford, just in time.

A few sore heads the following morning were met with Bloody Mary’s and almond croissants… a soft farewell, plenty of hugs and even more “see you soons.”

It was unlike anything we could have imagined. In a world where the news is dominated by uncertainty, fear, judgment and corruption; breaking bread with likeminded travellers, finding new friendships and cementing those made over many years is indeed a privilege.

We can’t wait to break bread again soon (stay tuned).
